Sociology: WEEK TWO
Television
Television is one of mass media people watch very often, families, young people and old generation. I came from a country where there were only few channels, not many choices to watch, and here I was amazed with many shows that became my favorite at a daily basis. I was influenced by images and advertizing. I was influenced by the preoccupations with outside image, and extremely concerned about the way they are seen by others.
I n television most of the time, the image of women are presented in the formation of women’s body images. Women are presented extremely thin models which can promote such eating disorders as bulimia and anorexia. Television provides its audiences an unrealistic and often unhealthy image of the beauty of the women. All the women become concerned about
Their outside appearance trying to imitate the beauty of women they see. This picture shows the beauty of the woman, and it is seen in television, post card, and calendar.
The media and technology are heavily influencing many teenagers, and resulting in lowered self esteem and confidence, increase violence, expanded use of alcohol smoking and drugs. The mass media has changed society as a whole; in the positive manor, but more so with negative regards. People are dying for anorexia and bulimia trying to attain some ideal body image that is created on TV. Many males are becoming extremely insecure with their body appearance as media increases the emission of standard and idealize well-built men. From teenage boys, Many turn to the use of anabolic steroids.
Mass media, Television have a negative influence over pre-adolescents and adolescents because it creates distorted self image,, encourages violence, contains very explicit sexual content and also promotes the use of drugs. Because all of this factors that were aforementioned there should be an increase in the number of educational programs and restriction of harmful emission.
I agree with your perspective that the media, especially television, gives an unrealistic image of people. Most of those actors wear tons of makeup on shows.Of course, they're going to look perfect.I liked the use of your pictures on your blog and thought it was good.
ReplyDeleteIt is unrealistic indeed, pure fiction, a complete fantasy and yet, so many are willing to buy into it. Certainly the visual media types capitalize on such ideals. Women both young and older are extremely vulnerable but, young men as well as older men are not immune. Such expectations are completely unattainable to the vast majority of people and on some level, we know this yet, still this illusionary ideology persists. It is extremely damaging to the self-esteem and we know this as well but, the industry doesn't show any sign of slowing the vanity wheel down one bit. I must agree with you, this IS a problem. Good choice of topics to address.
ReplyDeleteYou are right that the media has a bad influence on people especially the youth. An increasing number of young girls has been noted to suffer from bulimia and anorexia at the expense of finding a body image similar to that of celebrities shown by the media. This is wrong because people end up suffering and some even die just because of the wrong impression that the media portrayed. Being too explicit is also wrong as young people are exposed to a lot of things that are not appropriate to their age limit. I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures speak volumes about American culture. But many times we forget the fact that it is not just women that suffer from these unrealistic images, it is also men who deal with this as well. I completely agree with you, many of the images shown on television cause us to be self-conscious about ourselves in an extremely negative way. But at the same time i think the media is also doing a better job of encouraging women and men to be true to themselves, and to love themselves just the way they are.
ReplyDeleteYou made a good point about the influence of media , specially on young people. If the mass media has contributed to a dynamic of communication around the world, it has also harmed at some extend societies. As mentioned in your statement, drugs and perverse activities has been most of the time the result of media. Also, the propaganda of slender woman as model is something that breaks into other culture's model of woman. For me, it is a "culture intrusion" because the people that created television to dictate their ideology to the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said in your blog. Many young adults are being influenced by what is shown by mass media. If the media focused on more positive and realistic aspects of life, I do believe that there would be fewer adolescents trying to conform to what they see on TV and instead be themselves.
