week 3 sociology 101

WEEK3: Stratification, Social Mobility, and Inequality

Many factors contribute at inequality such as social inequality, invention, discovery, education, and wealth distribution in the world. Because that developed countries are in control of poor countries.

My topic of discussion is on micro level, and concerns many Africans who came in this country because they want to find peace, better life for their children and their family.
I have a friend who was doctor in his country, and because he could not practice in his country, he came here in US with his family. Joseph was 35 years at that moment, and he wanted to practice. He went to find a job, and it was like all the doors were close for him. They refused his license practice, and asked him to go back to school if he wants to be a doctor. He faced the challenge of finding a job as soon as possible to provide for his family. He started to work at McDonald, and because the pay was not enough, he had a second job. Joseph did not forget his practice, and at the time, he did not have money to go back to school. Supporting the family and getting relevant education required time and efforts for all immigrants in this country. After, 10 years in this country, Joseph had the opportunity to pay his school, and started practicing after three years. Regardless everything, immigrants understand the power of education. Therefore, they send their children to school for higher education, better career and better life.

To sum up equality can be possible if humans rights can be established in the world, if people can considered themselves equal to others. For example in this picture we can see a home less man, sitting on the floor, people are passing by and no one pay attention to him because of inequality around us.

  1. Your story is relevant and depicts many immigrants condition in the US;however, in this case, we have to comply with certain rules and regulations in order to be accepted, especially when the system do not know the foreigner. I agree about the trend of inequality regardless and question myself about functionalist theory, which would endorse inequality based on the fact it ensure social stability. I don't think so. Equality can be relevant in the world and the sky will not drop on us.

  2. many immigrants coming to the United States are faced with the same problems. No matter how qualified they may be they come across closed doors. Your friend is very lucky to have been able to go back to school and do what he loves. Many are not as fortunate.

  3. It is sad that your friend had to pass through that process in order for him to start working. The idea of going back to school for the same profession was not easy because it needed money and time, but thank God that he did and successfully completed the course. Many immigrants are faced with the same problem and i think that it the system that requires specific qualifications no matter how unfair it may appear.
